Very cold ice cream

It's great to slowly enjoy cold ice cream after a hectic day at work by relaxing at a local ice cream parlor and just kicking back and watching the world go by,but not too quickly.

Matinee Movie!

No one mentioned just going to a matinee movie in the afternoon - it is always so cool inside when it's hot outside! Afterwards, go out to dinner at one of the nearby restaurants and then go to the Foothill Mall or Tucson Mall and just walk around and people watch. Stop in the stores if you want - it is always cool there.

Going to Mount Lemon to camp is probably my favorite thing to do but that is everyones favorite thing here in Tucson!

Staying in White Mountains

For one week this summer my husband and I went up to the White Mountains for him to go to camp in Pinetop/Lakside.

While he was at camp I stayed with a girlfriend (that I grew up with down here) in Show Low.

I really enjoyed this cause for the first time since she and the family moved up there i got a tour of both cities (which I usually didn't cause she came down here for about 7 years).

Now we have a agreement that I'll go up one year, and she'll come down the next.

Next year when she comes down we'll find alot to do. I may even bring her on Wednesday nite.

Camping

It's always a real treat to go camping during the summer in the mountains and the pines. It's much cooler, the mornings are full of the sounds of whispering pines, birds and animals. Food always tastes better when camping, so a barbeque is always fun while camping. Sitting around a camp fire telling ghost stories and roasting marshmellows is a good way to top off the evening before retiring. Tucson is unique because you can escape the heat up at Mt. Lemmon or the Chiricahua Mountains.

Escape to Oregon

We are fortunate to be able to spend about 6 weeks in Oregon (we just moved here two years ago from Oregon), so heading back up during our daughter's 7-week summer break gives us the chance to escape the summer heat. Then we come back just in time for the monsoons.

Best Friends Treat

My best friend and I have known each other since we were in the 4th grade -- at the present ages of 55, we are still close as ever. My friend moved from Tucson to San Diego the middle of our freshman year in high school. Most summers after that, I always spent at least a week with her and her family in San Diego. The last couple of years, I have spent a few days with her in SD and after raising our children and watching her grandchildren (I don't have any yet), the best vacation is to sit back and enjoy our time together and talk about "old" times. We enjoy her family, spend time by her pool, go shopping, go to a movie, whatever... it is the best vacation after years of friendship!

I have found the joy of long flowing dresses that pick every little bit of breeze. And soy ice cream floats made with cream soda and chips of bananas and watermelon and other fruit on the side.

COOLING OFF AT REID PARK

The pool at the Edith Ball Adaptive Recreation Center at Reid Park, next to the zoo, is a great place to cool off during the summer - and admission is only 25 cents for children and $1 for adults! If you have ever seen the massive white circus tentlike canopy next to the zoo, then you know where it is. The entire outdoor pool is shaded by this cover. The pool has great facilities for kids, including all sorts of water park sprayers, dumpers and toys. There is a canal or channel in one part of the pool that has water jets shooting through it to propel you through the chute. The pool also has a "beach entry," meaning a gradually slope that is great for children. The center is at 3455 Zoo Court. Recreational swim times are 1-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon-4 p.m. Saturdays. Info: 791-5643.

Mt. Lemmon Getaway

Would love to take the family for a weekend getaway to Mt. Lemmon. We always tell the kids that we'll stay a whole weekend and not just a drive for the day, but we've never had the chance. We would just love this little escape!!

Free airconditioning!

We spent several summers with no airconditioning in my car while my girls were growing up. We'd make stops at various Circle K's in our travels, and I would treat my girls to big "slurpies" and call it our airconditioning !!!

If you are still living with evaporative cooling during these humid August days, head down to the theater and enjoy the best bargain in town. Use what there is

Yes, it may be a bit muggy at times, but when the sun sets on a cloudy western sky, take a walk. The air is truly cooler and there is a slight breeze in the air. Who said sweating a bit is bad for you? Why walk? Well when you drive through your neighborhood daily, you forget what brought you to the area to begin with. Walking will revist the reasons why you love the nieghborhood you live in.

Campgrounds

My husband and I love to go camping each year in Greer, Az. around the Fourth of July. Our Anniversary is July 2nd and we can't think of a better place to stay cool, camp in the woods, watch nature, enjoy a good book or a fun game of cards. But the greatest joy we've had is to bring our son along each year and spend some great family time with him. He's 18 now and may not spend summer vacations with us as much as we'd like him to, but I wouldn't trade all these past years of summer vacation for any fancy resort without him. Greer has a great campground and the weather is great, the people who live there are really nice. If you have young children and love the outdoors, take them camping as much as you can before they grow up. You'll never regret it. Happy Camping!!

Patagonia Lake

It's such a beautiful drive from Tucson through Sonoita to Patagonia. Once you get to the lake there are so many trees and lovely places to relax in the shade. The water is cool and the kids love to play at the beach and cath fish. Bring a picnic lunch and watch the monsoon roll in. It truly is a wonderful experience and only 45 minutes away.

My husband and I are originally from California and are both sun worshippers. My husband Mike was an avid surfer and I hung out at Hermosa & Manhatten Beaches in L.A. As we raised our family we always dreamed of having a home with a pool! Well last year that dream came true and we moved into a small house with a big yard and swimming pool. We don't understand how anyone can ignore and grow tired of having one!So many people have one without utilizing it!We LIVE in ours!!

Triple Header

When the temperatures begin to soar past the 105 degree mark it's time to take matters in hand.

With luck I'll find three movies that I want to see and after careful planning with regard to showtimes and transition from one theatre to another, I start with the first showing of the day usually around 10AM ($5); then a lunch break at the food court (about $7); next film in the lineup ($7); if there is enough time in between shows, an ice cream cone (the real deal please - no low fat, low sugar here) and then wrap it up with the last film of the day ($7). If the transition between films is too tight then ice cream comes at the end ($4).

For the budget conscious, the Oracle View theatre offers supersaver cards with 10 films for $20 - that's a savings of $3-$5 dollars per show. The Tucson Mall next door has a food court, and Baskin Robbins is located right down the road!

The day begins before the heat is too much and ends just around the time the sun is disppearing off the horizon - good for sunset viewing too! For $17-$30 (depending on the venue), whether as a group venture or solo outing, I get to experience a day of languishing in airconditioned comfort while being transported to entirely different worlds.

Short getaway

My son, husband and I if we can afford it, we drive down to Phoenix and stay at a hotel for the weekend once a year. We like to go the IMAX, have dinner, and walk around the malls. Just the fact that we are together enjoying each other's company makes us happy. No school, no work.

Mid-week nap

My wife, Karla, and I are self employed, which means we often work long hours and on weekends as well. We have begun taking Wednesdays or at least a portion of Wednesdays off. We live at the base of Mt. Lemmon and can be up the mountain from our driveway in about 20 minutes. We pack a picnic basket, a couple lawn chairs and a magazine or a book and enjoy the cool, quiet pines of the Catalina mountains. The cost is low, the quiet time is priceless and the convenience is unparalleled. We can escape the phones, the heat and have a refreshing escape without the hassles packing or a long drive. Being on the mountain during a good thunderstorm is also a plus if you like light shows.

Keeping cool at the Zoo!

Keeping cool at the zoo can be fun! The zoo has beautiful large shade trees and benches to sit and enjoy the animals. One of my favorite things to do is go into the aviary with a cool drink and sit on a bench and try to find all the different birds that they have listed on tablets. They are fun to watch and some of them will even "chat" or sing a song for you. Now the zoo has a water feature to really cool you off. It's great for the kids if you don't mind them getting soaked! The new education center has A/C and some cool exhibits. It's also fun to run into some of the teen volunteers and test them on their knowledge of the animals!

Have fun!

Fishing at Greer

Some of the best vacations we took was as a family to the White Mountains. We'd rent a small cabin and took all three of our children with us. We'd take them fishing in a stocked lake, to guarantee they'd catch a fish. Our children are all grown now, but I'd love to have that time back. Maybe we can live it again through our grandchildren.
