Show Low & Pinetop/Lakeside Johanna Camping It's always a real treat to go camping during the summer in the mountains and the pines. It's much cooler, the mornings are full of the sounds of whispering pines, birds and animals. Food always tastes better when camping, so a barbeque is always fun while camping. Sitting around a camp fire telling ghost stories and roasting marshmellows is a good way to top off the evening before retiring. Tucson is unique because you can escape the heat up at Mt. Then we come back just in time for the monsoons. Oregon Angela Best Friends Treat My best friend and I have known each other since we were in the 4th grade -- at the present ages of 55, we are still close as ever. My friend moved from Tucson to San Diego the middle of our freshman year in high school. Most summers after that, I always spent at least a week with her and her family in San Diego. The last couple of years, I have spent a few days with her in SD and after raising our children and watching her grandchildren (I don't have any yet), the best vacation is to sit back and enjoy our time together and talk about "old" times. We enjoy her family, spend time by her pool, go shopping, go to a movie, whatever... it is the best vacation after years of friendship! San Diego, CA Kathy Long dresses and soy ice cream floats. I have found the joy of long flowing dresses that pick every little bit of breeze. And soy ice cream floats made with cream soda and chips of bananas and watermelon and other fruit on the side. If you have ever seen the massive white circus tentlike canopy next to the zoo, then you know where it is. The entire outdoor pool is shaded by this cover. The pool has great facilities for kids, including all sorts of water park sprayers, dumpers and toys. There is a canal or channel in one part of the pool that has water jets shooting through it to propel you through the chute. The pool also has a "beach entry," meaning a gradually slope that is great for children. The center is at 3455 Zoo Court. Recreational swim times are 1-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and noon-4 p.m. Saturdays. Info: 791-5643. River and Craycroft Liz Campgrounds My husband and I love to go camping each year in Greer, Az. around the Fourth of July. Our Anniversary is July 2nd and we can't think of a better place to stay cool, camp in the woods, watch nature, enjoy a good book or a fun game of cards. But the greatest joy we've had is to bring our son along each year and spend some great family time with him. He's 18 now and may not spend summer vacations with us as much as we'd like him to, but I wouldn't trade all these past years of summer vacation for any fancy resort without him. Greer has a great campground and the weather is great, the people who live there are really nice. If you have young children and love the outdoors, take them camping as much as you can before they grow up. You'll never regret it. Happy Camping!! White Mountains (Greer, Az) Yoli Patagonia Lake It's such a beautiful drive from Tucson through Sonoita to Patagonia. Phoenix Raychel Verdugo Mid-week nap My wife, Karla, and I are self employed, which means we often work long hours and on weekends as well. We have begun taking Wednesdays or at least a portion of Wednesdays off. We live at the base of Mt. Lemmon and can be up the mountain from our driveway in about 20 minutes. We pack a picnic basket, a couple lawn chairs and a magazine or a book and enjoy the cool, quiet pines of the Catalina mountains. The cost is low, the quiet time is priceless and the convenience is unparalleled. We can escape the phones, the heat and have a refreshing escape without the hassles packing or a long drive. Being on the mountain during a good thunderstorm is also a plus if you like light shows. Mount Lemmon Toddd Spray I teach 2nd grade. I keep a spray bottle of water in the refrigerator. Keeping cool at the zoo can be fun! The zoo has beautiful large shade trees and benches to sit and enjoy the animals. One of my favorite things to do is go into the aviary with a cool drink and sit on a bench and try to find all the different birds that they have listed on tablets. They are fun to watch and some of them will even "chat" or sing a song for you. Now the zoo has a water feature to really cool you off. It's great for the kids if you don't mind them getting soaked! The new education center has A/C and some cool exhibits. It's also fun to run into some of the teen volunteers and test them on their knowledge of the animals! Tucson Yvonne Catalina State Park We just moved here from the East Coast and were pleasantly surprised with the initial loop of the Catalina State Park trail and all for a $3.00 car fee. It was cool to walk by the stream and to be in parts of the canyon. A very special treat for escaping the summer heat Oro Valley Ron Viafore Fishing at Greer Some of the best vacations we took was as a family to the White Mountains. We'd rent a small cabin and took all three of our children with us. We'd take them fishing in a stocked lake, to guarantee they'd catch a fish. Our children are all grown now, but I'd love to have that time back. Maybe we can live it again through our grandchildren. White Mountains Joy Thomas Frozen Margarita My honey whips up some awesome frozen margaritas! A great blenderrrr makes it mighty slushy-like, and they almost go down way too easy! Home Sara Playing in the rain -- then making mud cakes with grandchildren Spending time with my grandchildren during a rainy day and going outside in the rain and just running around letting the rain fall on us and then after the rain playing with mud making mud pie's and just having fun.
