Meet Thomas Murray this week's Ben's Bells Bellee! Tom was nominated by Liz Kelly for his passionate work as the Director of the University of Arizona’s New Student Experience. His background is in counseling and he has a passion for student affairs, access to higher education and community support and kindness. Tom is also a motivated change-maker. He listens to student’s needs and works to make the University more inclusive, accessible, and "kind" for the students who go through his programs.
This past summer, Tom earned the nickname “Step Dad” from the students, which really translated their feelings for him. He shows them he cares, he listens to their stress, shares his own anecdotes, and he advocates on their behalf when it is called for.
This year, Tom worked with his supervisors to create the Fostering Success program at the University of Arizona. After witnessing the need for an on-campus advocate and coordinator for former/current foster youth, emancipated youth and other students with similar backgrounds, Tom jumped to action to lobby for this program to exist and we are now in the inaugural year!
If you know someone who spreads kindness within the Greater Tucson or Phoenix community, nominate them for a Ben's Bell! bensbells.org
